Transponder?

I was reviewing the rules in preparation for my son's first race this weekend and saw that a transponder is required for scoring. The race registration form includes a box for transponder rental at $10, and I see that they are being sold for $330 on Comet's website. Do most folks simply rent at the track, or do I need to purchase one? Where do kid karters mount them? Thanks.
