Motor Identification

Post by John Starkweather » Thu May 08, 2014 9:38 pm

Hey I'm new to karting and I'm still trying to figure out what I'm looking at! So far from what I have researched it looks like a modified chonda motor? Can someone verify this and how to decode the serial number? I have the gas tank and cover off at the moment but does anything else look weird or an upgrade?

If you can't find your answers here. I highly recommend you sign up and make a post over on Bobs4cycle forum under the Clone section. http://karting.4cycle.com/index.php There is a pretty diverse knowledge base over there and they might be able to help you out. I will say, that motor is not legal for the Chonda class @ GCKI.

Thanks for the response. When I get home today I'll head over and make a post there! I live in houston so I'm trying to get this kart race ready. What do you see that that's not legal on it? Sorry I know it's a broad question and I don't know the internals of it but I'm trying to decide if I should convert this or sell it and buy a different motor.

Based on your pics alone, the first thing that sticks out are the carb and intake system are not legal for the Chonda class. There is no telling what the internals could be and that's a whole different ball game. Both ARC - http://www.arcracing.com/servlet/StoreFront and Boxstockproject.com sell complete engine packages ready to bolt on the accessories and go racing. The following link with the 6619 aluminum flywheel is probably the most popular option most of us start out with. http://www.arcracing.com/servlet/the-20 ... 6.5/Detail Before jumping in head first on a new engine purchase, look at the flywheel on your current engine and check it against the GCKI rules. It very well could be one of the flywheels permitted at GCKI and could save you $100 or so.

1: Take a look and get acquainted at the Chonda class rules for GCKI. http://www.racekarts.com/Classes.html
2: You can get the AKRA rule book at http://www.boxstockproject.com I think the cost is $10 but you know you will be legal at the end of the day.
3: Come out to the track on a race day and talk to some of the Chonda racers. There are a lot of tips concerning engine break in, how much oil, type and weight of oil, etc... that you will want to get recommendations on. Everyone has their preferences but you will at least have a solid starting point to get started racing with some degree of reliability. Like all the racers at GCKI, the Chonda racers are a great group and we all typically help each other until we strap the helmets on. And then some of us still help each other around the track on occasion. :D
4: Like I said before, Register at bobs4cycle.com There is a lot of good information there to help the newbie get familiar with the Clone (Chonda) engines.
5. Youtube is your friend. Several good videos on the clone engines as well as numerous videos posted by GCKI Chonda racers.

Hope to see you at the track soon,
Ted
